Despite negative series: government welded together

Date:

Karl Nehammer fights on many fronts for survival. Only the climate within the coalition does not seem to suffer – four reasons why Nehammer and Werner Kogler harmonize.

His negative streak just won’t end: transfer rumours, bad polls. A ÖVP Tyrol who prefers the name of the unknown top candidate “Anton Mattle” to the ballot paper than the party name.

Fear of new elections melts together
There are also party colleagues who behind closed doors slander that ÖVP Chancellor Karl Nehammer uses his wife as an adviser too often. In view of these bad values, only the sheer fear of a crash in the new elections holds the turquoise-green together, is the story of the political pundits.

Coalition works better since Kurz left
This was hardly noticeable at the Summer Council of Ministers. There were governments when the atmosphere within the coalition was very chilly. Not so with turquoise-green. Between chanterelles with dumplings and boiled beef, Nehammer and Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler were extremely amicable. The duo works with less friction than the Kurz and Kogler combination.

Where does the trust come from? The Greens know Nehammer from the coalition negotiations. Nehammer ended the sensitive asylum chapter and paved the way for the coalition agreement.

hope for autumn
Point two for the “we” feeling: ÖVP and Greens feel unfairly judged. They stick together to overcome the “greatest multiple crisis”. This fact is hardly taken into account, according to the media.

The coalition believes it will be rewarded with better research results, especially from the autumn, when anti-inflationary measures will be felt in the bills. Political expert Thomas Hofer, however, has little hope: “You have to recognize that the coalition has abolished the cold progression and appreciated the social benefits, but there will still be no recovery.”

Vienna as a great counterpoint
Point three for the “we” feeling – just means Vienna. When the Greens and the ÖVP talk about the Vienna city council, many members of the government go “crazy”. Certainly with the “Vienna Way” in the pandemic, according to government ranks, there is a PR strategy behind it.

A lot of emotional porcelain has been broken between the Greens and the Viennese SPÖ. Michael Ludwig dismissed the Greens as coalition partner. And Environment Minister Leonore Gewessler closed the Lobau tunnel for Ludwig.

Green still only crown princess
The fourth point is a simple power point, which now speaks against new elections. “In a traffic light coalition, the Greens would be just one of two crown princesses alongside the NEOS. Now the Greens are the only ones,” explains Hofer.
