“Pre-selection shame” – Transit Forum: Toll letter to EU has (too) long beard

Date:

The Transit Forum Austria-Tyrol under Fritz Gurgiser only sees the new approach to the corridor toll on the Brenner route as election campaign bullshit in the run-up to the Tyrolean state elections. The transit containment is also failing because of our northern and southern neighbors, as Gurgiser points out point by point.

As the years go by, the transit problem persists: in a joint letter to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, Tyrol, South Tyrol and Bavaria have now called for the introduction of the much-discussed corridor toll, which aims to to make it more expensive. It is said that one should not wait for the opening of the Brenner Base Tunnel (probably in 2032).

The governor of South Tyrol, Arno Kompatscher, also wants a “booking system” for truck trips via the Brenner axis. Under the motto: Whoever drives more, pays more.

Eternal suffering in gardens and on balconies
For Transitforum chairman Fritz Gurgiser, it is all a joke in the run-up to the state elections. “The proposals have a beard to the center of the earth. But announcements don’t help those highway neighbors who haven’t been able to use their yard, patio, and balcony for decades.” Especially when kids tell their parents, “I don’t want to live here anymore when I grow up.”

Neighbors miss homework
Gurgiser refers to untapped opportunities, especially among the neighbours: increasing the “social toll” from just 16 or 18 cents per truck kilometer by 60 cents, especially on the Rosenheim-Kufstein and Brenner-Verona route. A night driving ban and keeping classic ‘rail goods’ off the road is still missing. Also, all three states should implement a digital dosing system along the entire trajectory. “Instead, lawsuits are looming over Kufstein’s legally compliant blocking treatment,” the Transitforum boss sighs.
