Tyrolean driving bans – Salvini is now threatening infringement proceedings

Date:

Italian Transport Minister Matteo Salvini sharpened his tone about the Tyrolean driving bans. Speaking to the freight association Confartigianato Trasporti, he complained about “the wholly inadequate cooperation between the Austrian authorities in the extremely restrictive procedures for cross-border access for trucks”. The right-wing politician threatened Austria with an infringement procedure in Brussels.

“If there is no signal from the Austrian side and no agreement is reached, we will start an infringement procedure,” said the deputy prime minister and chairman of the right-wing governing party Lega, according to the media.

“Italy has lost its patience”
“The Italian state has tools to make it clear that we have lost patience because unfair competition can no longer be tolerated,” he added.

Meeting with German counterpart
Salvini said he will discuss driving bans with his German colleague Volker Wissing in January. The aim is to put pressure on the European Commission with a joint initiative.

Italy is ready to do everything possible to defend its interests. “It is unacceptable that there are first and second class countries in Europe.” The Italian complained about unequal competitive conditions.
