Friday at 5 p.m. passed the deadline to submit 6,000 statements of support to the federal electoral authority to officially get on the ballot for the upcoming federal presidential election. According to their own statements, seven candidates have already passed this hurdle – another four candidates clearly did not find enough supporters, but submitted them anyway. Under the electoral law, the electoral authority must grant you a three-day grace period to repair the defect.
The seven candidates likely to be voted on October 9 are:
- seated Alexander Van der Bellen,
- Michael Brunner,
- Gerard Grosz,
- Walter Rosencrantz,
- Heinrich Staudinger,
- Tassilo Wallentin
- and Dominik Wlazny.
As the Ministry of the Interior announced in a broadcast, the representatives authorized to receive the service have reached the number of necessary statements of support.
Hoping for a grace period
But they also submitted nominations
- Wolfgang Ottowitz
- David Packer
- Johann Peter Schutte
- Robert Marshall.
Marschall already did this in 2016 – and then at the end of the grace period had not even a quarter of the necessary supporters.
As then, at their meeting tomorrow, Saturday night, the federal electoral authority will grant those who missed the hurdle a grace period (until Tuesday, midnight). Then the electoral authority will count the statements of support again – as it is now. It then meets again on Thursday to finalize and announce the election proposals – as required by law on the 31st day before the election. The ballots can then be sent to the press.
