Van der Bellen Favorit – Presidential elections: ‘Chance of second round increases’

Date:

There are more or less seven candidates for the presidential election. The incumbent Alexander Van der Bellen is the big favourite. However, experts see obstacles.

At the end, the title holder enters the ring. Alexander Van der Bellen cast 25,000 votes for reelection just before the deadline on Friday. “I want to win on the first ballot.” He stands for “experience, stability, independence”. He has six challengers (see table below).

Hardly getting a breath of fresh air at Van der Bellen
How do experts assess the field? Political scientist Katrin Stainer-Hämmerle thinks people would traditionally want an older, more thoughtful gentleman in this office, but notes: “He’s not a breath of fresh air like in 2016. And: he represents the political system that is being questioned by many. “

Broad support can become a problem
Christoph Haselmayer of the opinion research institute IFDD also sees it that way. “Governors, parties and NGOs – almost all of them support the president. That could be his problem.”

People’s trust in the system is at an all-time low. “Corporations send people short-time working because of the gas crisis. There are many inflation losers who see Van der Bellen as a representative of the government.”

FPÖ candidate in the pole for the second round of voting
Moreover, the more candidates, the greater the chance that there will be a second round. “The chances are increasing. It would be the greatest political shame.” As of today, FPÖ candidate Walter Rosenkranz is likely to compete as a duellist, and he is also using the FPÖ’s resistance to sanctions against Russia, which many would question.

Wlazny scores especially well with boys
Stainer-Hämmerle and Haselmayer believe that rock doctor Dominik Wlazny (Marco Pogo) will score with young, urban people. Tassilo Wallentin is believed to be capable of many things – not least because of his column in the “Krone” he became famous. Like ex-BZÖ man and blogger Gerald Grosz, he fishes in blue waters.

Brunner can be “crushed”.
MFG candidate Michael Brunner will likely be “crushed” in between. With Grosz, the question arises whether he can also mobilize his many followers. Shoe manufacturer Heinrich Staudinger completed the special all-men group on Friday.

According to Haselmayer, the dazzling Upper Austrian could inspire three percent. He focuses on the themes of poverty and nature conservation. Speaking of which: Alexander Van der Bellen appealed to his supporters to vote as well. “It’s almost Oktoberfest time.”
