Is there a course debate? – After discharge: severe turbulence in the ÖVP

Date:

“It’s not my world anymore.” The resigned ÖVP Secretary-General Laura Sachslehner is getting rid of the coalition. Is there now an internal price debate looming?

“Even the appointment of Laura Sachslehner as ÖVP Secretary General was an accident, now she has caused maximum damage. Political expert Thomas Hofer summarizes the reason for the new crisis in a nutshell. The reason for this is not the resignation of Sachslehner himself. Because many in the ÖVP had been hoping for months that the taboo woman would withdraw, on the contrary, her protest note against the government has caused unrest: “This is no longer my world,” she announced.

She rejects the payment of the climate bonus for asylum seekers and the Greens’ refusal to renegotiate. A personal line had been crossed for the controversial general secretary. “It is historically unique for a secretary general to resign with such harsh criticism of her own party leadership,” said pollster Christoph Haselmayer. This all happens at an extremely inopportune time. In two weeks there are elections in Tyrol. In addition, a new survey by Unique Research on behalf of the “Krone” gauged the satisfaction of Upper Austrians after a year of the ÖVP/FPÖ coalition.

Coalition crash over Sachslehner .’s claim
The ÖVP is only in second place with 28 percent (he had 37.6 percent in the election). The cause of the crash is the federal party: the ÖVP would not be able to solve the problems in the crisis. What led to this escalation? The 28-year-old called for the climate bonus law to be changed as soon as possible. After Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler (Greens) rejected it, she followed up and saw “a red line crossed for the People’s Party”. Green club boss Sigrid Maurer wondered if Sachslehner was questioning the coalition.

ÖVP club boss August Wöginger had to move on Friday evening. “The ÖVP has always been loyal to the pact and will remain so in this case,” he said. Sachslehner pulled the rope before being forced to resign. It wasn’t the first excitement she sparked. Does Karl Nehammer regret supporting Sachslehner for so long? As early as May, ÖVP superpowers called for their resignation. Nehammer did not go with him.

Now there is a danger that a debate about the course of the ÖVP will erupt on the open stage. The Deputy Speaker of the Vienna State Parliament, Markus Wölbitsch, already congratulated Sachslehner on her protest speech. The ÖVP boss now has to find a personality that works with more sensitivity. It will not be easy, because the party is extremely thin on the staff.
