Hardly any investment in gas – Kneissl: Europe itself caused the energy crisis

Date:

According to former Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl, the energy crisis in Europe started in 2021 and was provoked by European politicians themselves. Kneissl explained this in an interview published on Sunday with the Russian news agency TASS. “There’s absolutely no need to just think about the coming winter,” she said. The European energy crisis is serious.

“Even before the start of the gas crisis, we had a crisis in the electricity sector, which is the result of the liberalization of the last 15 to 18 years, we have been experiencing it since April 2021, so for more than a year. (…) In general, this is a situation that we have provoked,” the state-controlled news agency quoted the former foreign minister as saying.

Electricity market still highly dependent on gas price
Kneissl said the electricity market in Europe now operates “on some incomprehensible principles” and is not a classic supply and demand market. “About 18 years ago, he adapted to favor renewable energy sources, which put the market in serious trouble,” the ex-minister said. “I don’t want to go into technical details, but the fact is that despite the role of renewable energy sources, the electricity market is still heavily dependent on the price of gas, even if the electricity is generated more from renewable sources,” said the lawyer and diplomat. , who has covered the subject of energy management in several books.

Kneissl added that Europe had invested very little in gas and oil in recent years, while investment went elsewhere.

Kneissl was nominated by the FPÖ as foreign minister in December 2017. Her personal ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin are known for his appearance at her 2018 wedding in Styria. The government had to leave her as a result of the vote of no confidence in the government shortly after the Ibiza affair in May 2019.

Columnist at the Russian channel RT
The former foreign minister now works as a regular columnist for the state-affiliated Russian broadcaster RT. She left her position on the board of directors of the Russian oil company Rosneft in May. She has since moved to Lebanon and participated in the “Eastern Economic Forum” in Vladivostok at the beginning of September.
