In the coming week, former Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) will return to the political scene, albeit somewhat involuntarily. He is invited as a source of information in the corruption investigation committee of the ÖVP. The subject will be various appointments and trials in his chancellorship up to the advertising affair. After Kurz, ex-Vice Deputy Secretary-General Axel Melchior and Tyrolean MP and top cable car operator Franz Hörl put questions to MPs on Wednesday.
The range of research topics for the former chancellor and ex-ÖVP chief extends to all four evidence topics, from influencing award and funding processes to influencing federal holding companies, influencing investigations and advancing staff selection . It remains to be seen how far Kurz will go due to ongoing investigations.
Investigation of false testimonies and Beinschab-Causa
The Economic and Corruption Prosecution Service (WKStA) is investigating the former head of government, among other things because of the accusation of false statements in the Ibiza inquiry commission or also in the so-called Beinschab complex – the affair surrounding opinion pollster Sabine Beinschab and allegedly on behalf of Turkish ministries with public money Studies that would have been beneficial for the party or for the advancement of ex-chancellor Kurz. Kurz had already been invited twice to the previous committee, the Ibiza inquiry committee.
Hörl and Melchior also invited
After him, the former VP Secretary-General Melchior will also reappear in the parliamentary body on Wednesday. Already in the Ibiza U committee, Melchior was asked about donations to the ÖVP or the “Ballhausplatz project”, ie the internal campaign strategy paper aimed at getting Kurz into the chancellery in 2017. This time again, the opposition MPs and the Greens will be interested in the internal affairs of the Turks. However, it is questionable to what extent the trial judge will allow this, since the subcommittee can only investigate administrative acts of the federal government.
The question is whether Hörl, the third person to provide information, will come on Wednesday. The potential for rules of procedure discussion, in both Kurz’s and Melchior’s research, shouldn’t be particularly small.
Another ÖVP day will follow on Thursday. Two officials from the Ministry of Arts and Sports, which was responsible for allocating NPO funds, had been invited by the Turks. The ÖVP wants to investigate whether there has been political influence on decisions.
