Wants to be number 1 – Lindner elected SPÖ leader in Upper Austria with 96 percent

Date:

At the conference of the state party in the Design Center of Linz, the SPÖ will choose its new chairman today. In his speech, Michael Lindner set an ambitious goal: the SPÖ should become the number one in the country.

“Some will think, is Lindner crazy? How should that work?” That’s what Michael Lindner said after giving the marching directions on the podium for 800 delegates and guests seconds earlier: The SPÖ should be number one in Upper Austria in a few years.

“Of course it works”
And the appointed new party leader gave himself the answer in the form of the same motto of the party congress: “Of course it works!” The SPÖ must make politics “with a clear line that people understand”.

“Last light” when it comes to inflation
Lindner tried to use inflation to explain what he means by this — and most importantly, how he wouldn’t do it: unlike the black-and-blue governing coalition. They do “nothing” about the financial burden: “Upper Austria is at the rear when it comes to fighting inflation at the state level.”

The ÖVP in particular was plagued by it several times: “It doesn’t work that way, Mr. Stelzer”, he said to the governor amid applause from the comrades.

“Bring back the federal state from ÖVP”
With his approach to the creation of the digital university, the ÖVP “failed” an “opportunity of the century”, slackened the energy transition and was intoxicated by its power: “The ÖVP believes that the federal state belongs to them. We will ensure that the people of Upper Austria get the state back from the ÖVP.”

Support of Rendi-Wagner
In terms of content, federal party leader Pamela Rendi-Wagner had previously prepared the ground: she denounced what she saw as failing federal politics.

“Crises are a brutal test for politics. The current federal and state government in Upper Austria fail this test.” She again called for a rental brake, the suspension of VAT or an upper limit on fuel prices.

membership decision
For the first time in the party’s history, the chairman was not directly elected by the delegates at the party congress. Instead, since September 3, about 11,000 members have participated in the party leadership vote, a turnout of 46 percent.

The result of the election was announced at the end of the party congress: the comrades chose Michael Lindner with 95.94 percent as the new SPÖ leader.
