There are seven men and no women to choose from. And these are the reasons:
In 1893 women in Vienna took to the streets to demonstrate. The reason: just like the men, they wanted to be able to vote. In 2022, women will not only be allowed to vote for politicians, they will ‘even’ be politicians themselves. And yet no one stood up for the presidential election. The “Krone” asked experts what could be the reasons for this.
“Men dominate at parties”
“Women earn less, have interrupted career paths and will soon reach the ‘glass ceiling’. The higher the position, the lower the proportion of women. There is a lack of political will to change that!” says Anna Babka of the University of Vienna. In many parties there is a male dominance. She also believes that girls need role models to encourage them to enter politics. More women in politics would therefore be important.
Stefan Vater (University of Vienna) takes the state to court when it comes to women in public: “One aspect is that clichéd characteristics are still attributed to women in public. And Austria is a patriarchal society and sexism towards women is still the order of the day.”
