Advantages of Wlazny – This is how voters by mail can change the election result

Date:

3,340,609 votes cast in the polling stations in the Hofburg elections were already evaluated on Sunday – but a large part is still missing: an estimated 850,000 votes came by mail, which is one fifth of the total. They will be counted on Monday. They will not change the election victory of Alexander Van der Bellen. But they make all the difference in who is third in Austria – and second in Vienna. And they significantly improve participation.

Across Austria, Beer Party boss Dominik Wlazny has better prospects than lawyer and ‘Krone’ columnist Tassilo Wallentin. Wallentin (with 8.39 percent) was in third place nationwide among ballot box voters – and 5078 votes for Wlazny (8.23 percent). The extrapolators assume that Wlazny will benefit from the postal vote, but that Wallentin’s share of the vote will be slightly reduced.

Two projections predict Wlazny in third place
The ARGE Wahlen sees Wlazny in its extrapolation for the APA at 8.74 percent, which was adjusted according to the final result, well ahead of Wallentin at 8.01 percent. Also Wlazny (with 8.4 percent) in third place is the result of the SORA/ORF extrapolation after the counting of the ballot box – Wallentin is much closer to the candidate of the beer party in this calculation with 8.3 percent.

Vienna: Wlazny can finish second to Rosencrantz
As for Vienna, the extrapolators disagree on whether Wlazny (ballot box: 10.85 percent) can still take second place behind FPÖ candidate Walter Rosenkranz (11.76 percent). The ARGE Wahlen eventually sees Wlazny with 11.3 percent ahead of Rosencrantz with 10.7. However, in the SORA/ORF extrapolation for Vienna, Rosenkranz can only hold (74,228 votes) ahead of Wlazny (74,063) – and both have 10.9 percent. Among the voters, Rosencrantz received 4,615 votes more than the leader of the beer party.

As in 2016, Van der Bellen will benefit greatly from voting by post. His share of the vote across Austria will increase from 54.6 to 56.2 or 56.3 percent. The PVV is traditionally weak among postal voters – so Rosenkranz’s result (on Sunday 19.09) will ultimately be significantly lower: ARGE Wahlen reports 17.7 percent, SORA 17.9 percent. Wallentin, former FPÖ/BZÖ politician Gerald Grosz, MFG boss Michael Brunner and shoe manufacturer Heinrich Staudinger will also eventually have to adjust to a lower percentage of votes.

Turnout will take a big jump: Sunday’s meager 52.50 percent should rise to about 65 percent.
