No Expensive Drain – Peace and Relief on “Blue Monday”

Date:

Even though the results of Sunday’s federal presidential elections did not quite meet the requirements, the liberals are relaxed about the sequel. Although their candidate Walter Rosenkranz failed to reach the target of a runoff election, he still exceeded expectations with about 19 percent approval, taking the second-best result for an FPÖ candidate. Behind closed doors, it seems they aren’t at all unhappy that they don’t have to go down an expensive drain.

The week after the election is traditionally started with the free “blue Monday”, on which one or the other official is likely to recover from the electoral party. There was no real party on Sunday evening, but the FPÖ was quite satisfied. After all, the presidential election can be seen as a kind of mood barometer for upcoming elections. The mood after Election Sunday: The party recovered well after the Ibiza scandal and the change of chairman.

Glad there is no drain
Due to illness, party chairman Herbert Kickl stayed away from the closing meeting and on election Sunday. He should also be pleased with Rosenkranz’s performance, according to reports. What some blues are still happy about: the lack of a second round. Incumbent Alexander Van der Bellen, who was confirmed on Sunday, would probably have won this, but it would only put more strain on the party treasury. The focus is now on the upcoming elections in Lower Austria and Carinthia.

Any Sunday debriefing in the Liberal board should therefore be more devoted to the challenges ahead, wound licking during a crisis meeting is far from the order of the day, as several officials said. An online session in the middle or end of this week cannot be ruled out. And Rosencrantz himself had already announced on Sunday that he would be back in his office in the Ombudsman’s office.
