8000 places – Nursing training gets a new foundation

Date:

On Thursday, the National Council unanimously gave the nursing training a new look. In the future, after compulsory education, young people will be able to go to five-year higher professional education programs for nursing and welfare care or three-year technical schools. In the final phase, there should be 8,000 apprenticeships.

The higher education institutions are structured as five-year vocational programs (BHS) which, like the Hogere Technische Hogescholen (HTL), for example, end with the Matura. In addition, graduates receive a qualification as a nursing assistant or alternatively as a social worker. At the three-year technical schools for social professions with nursing preparation (vocational secondary schools), the learning content can be preferred over additional training, such as nursing assistance.

Running school tests
School trials are already underway for both projects. They will be offered regularly from 2023/24, Education Minister Martin Polaschek (ÖVP) announced. This is an important and fundamental point of the health care reform, which will reduce the staff shortage. In the final phase, there should be 8,000 training places in Austria.

The regular provision of the new schools is part of a new school package. Another point is that schools should use more English in the classroom. This includes English as the medium of instruction in general secondary education (AHS) and secondary schools.
