The COP27 was definitely a failure, says Lukas Hammer, climate spokesperson for the Greens, in the conversation on krone.tv with Jana Pasching. The human rights situation in host country Egypt is anything but satisfactory. Hammer describes the creation of a fund to offset climate-related losses in particularly vulnerable developing countries as a success. Nevertheless, “We won’t be able to pay our way out of the climate crisis.” It takes a lot of pressure here to make something happen. “Who says we can’t become climate refugees at some point?”
That next year’s COP28 will be held in the United Arab Emirates, a major oil and gas producer, “sounds a bit like a bad joke,” Hammer said. It was already difficult in Egypt this year. Hammer argues that a “coalition of the willing” should be formed by countries that are wealthy and have a say in international diplomacy. “If you leave it to the Emirates to make this a success, it will be a fiasco.”
According to Hammer, it was clear that the security forces of the Egyptian regime were on site at the conference venue, which is not officially Egyptian territory. “They filmed, photographed and kept an eye on us. I was forced to delete photos from my phone,” Hammer said in shock. It is very annoying that the UN has given the Egyptian regime so much space and they have been patient.
Spy app caused a stir
The official app of the climate conference, which was made available to the participants to help them navigate the field, turned out to be a spy app. “All delegations advised against it. No one subsequently installed this app because it was pure spyware, where the hard drive was then copied from the mobile phone.”
In the video above you can see what Lukas Hammer reports about the human rights situation on the ground and why the Green MP believes that something needs to be done as soon as possible to protect the climate.
