Foreign policy is not the usual playing field of the opposition (although often not that of the government either). SPÖ leader Pamela Rendi-Wagner is now strengthening her international contacts, especially at European level.
Last week she met her Social Democratic colleagues from Europe in Berlin. She again called for decisive action against extreme inflation and a common price cap.
However, Rendi-Wagner flashed German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) with the proposal for a cap – Berlin is expressly against a price cap and Brussels recently said a cap is unlikely to come.
EU evening at the National Library
The SPÖ leader regularly receives advice on European issues from former Chancellor Franz Vranitzky. On the occasion of his 85th birthday, Rendi-Wagner invited him to an EU evening at the National Library on Monday.
Next week, Rendi-Wagner will continue her international round: at an event that revolves around the future of Europe, she will meet Luxembourg Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn.
It seems the SPÖ leader is rehearsing with her foreign policy ambitions for possible higher ordinations.
