Challenging times for the government, but the federal army is doing better financially: Minister Klaudia Tanner (ÖVP) speaks in our current issue of “Club 3” (video above) about the shattered party, the war in Ukraine and the increase in the allowances for conscript…
“I am not a judge,” Defense Secretary Tanner emphasizes in the “Club 3” TV talk of “Kurier”, “profil” and “Krone”. Although she actually had an army budget of 16 billion euros to celebrate, the minister first had to respond to Thomas Schmid’s statements and the chat affair.
She is not disappointed in Sebastian Kurz, she has faith in the judiciary and continues to write WhatsApp messages. Tanner answers how the ugly chats came about with a counter question: “What institution and company is there where one or the other doesn’t turn out to be someone whose character you don’t want in your own association?
500 euros salary for recruits from 2023
She is very positive about the trend reversal that has led to the increase in the budget for the army. “A very important point is the staff. Building on everything, the conscripts, especially on the basic pay issue.” From 2023, the conscripts will now receive 500 euros instead of the previous 360, which, according to Tanner, is a milestone.
Progress has also been made in education, for example, since the autumn there has been a new course at the military academy in Wiener Neustadt that trains so-called cyber soldiers.
Solidarity with Ukraine will continue to be evident in the form of cots and protective clothing. Tanner currently does not want to follow the Irish example of training Ukrainian soldiers: “We don’t supply weapons, so we don’t train soldiers.”
