Before the meeting of the EU states with representatives of the six Western Balkan states, she emphasized: “The Russian war of aggression in Ukraine has made it clear to us that we as the EU must finally get started when it comes to the integration of the six states of the Western Balkans After the talks, Raab was satisfied: “The agreements signed today are a step in the right direction.”

Raab also stated: “We cannot afford to have influences from other powers in our immediate vicinity. It is about nothing less than security and stability in the region, which has a direct impact on us.” Enlargement is the most powerful geopolitical tool available to the EU, “Every country in Europe should have understood that by now.”

Scholz: “Your accession is in our interest”
The conference host, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, also emphasized that the Russian attack is increasing the pressure on the six Western Balkan countries to join the EU. “There is a greater urgency to this,” he said at the opening of the meeting in the German chancellery. The so-called Berlin process will accelerate the accession process of Serbia, North Macedonia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Kosovo. “Your accession is in our interest,” he told the six governments.

EU helps with 1 billion euros in energy crisis
Agreements were signed in Berlin on the mutual recognition of identity cards, university degrees and professional qualifications. “So the process in Berlin is making progress,” Scholz said. According to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, the EU is supporting the six countries of the Western Balkans with a billion euros in the energy crisis. 500 million euros is emergency aid to absorb the high energy costs. Another 500 million euros is earmarked for investments in the conversion of the energy supply. In addition, the region will be connected to the pipeline network in Europe.
