With these words, the government delegate in Euskadi, Denis Itxaso, opened the day of remembrance in the plenary hall of Portugalete. The conviction comes a few days after the controversy sparked by the interview with former Interior Minister José Barrionuevo in “El País.”

The government delegate in Euskadi, Denis Itxaso, on Thursday condemned the existence of the GAL, “a great horror that has caused pain that is our own, and has deducted credit and legitimacy from the state,” he pointed out. Itxaso’s statements come a few days after the controversy sparked by the interview with former Interior Minister José Barrionuevo in The country.

Itxaso made these statements at the City Hall of Portugalete during his speech commemorating the remembrance day which will be held tomorrow, November 10, in Euskadi. In his words, the GAL “should never have happened and should only have contributed to causing pain and nourishing the Law of Talion.”

He also stressed that “the defense of human rights is not credible if it is not comprehensive and coherent, and from the legitimacy we gain by defending freedom, democracy and the rule of law against the terrorist threat, we are returning to to condemn the GAL”.

During his speech, the government delegate pointed out that “we must have the courage to face the task of delegitimizing hate speech without taboos. It is time for clarity and to claim that the coherence of the rule of law and democratic guarantees for the coexistence are maintained,” he underlined.
