Vote at rock bottom – majority of Austrians want expert government

Date:

A recent survey shows that the majority of people would trade the current government for non-politicians. A breath of fresh air is needed. A lot is possible for new movements.

The government stumbles from one corner to the other. The latest hit: a representative Gallup survey. 56 percent want turquoise green to make way for a cabinet of experts. 31 percent are in favor of a permanent solution (graph). Gallup director Andrea Fronaschütz: “People want politics, but without politicians.”

Expert government was popular
That happened before. To Ibiza under the leadership of Chancellor Brigitte Bierlein for a few months. The government only administered, but it was popular. According to Gallup, 63 percent would vote for a party that blows through the country like a breath of fresh air. When it comes to qualified government personnel, it is mainly about expertise through professional experience.

“The furor is understandable,” says political adviser Thomas Hofer. Scandals, affairs, so-called bad crisis management. All this leads to frustration. Hofer points out that expertise alone is not enough. “Politics is a difficult subject. You have to learn that.’ As a positive example he cites Minister of Economic Affairs Martin Kocher. The economist also has good values. Hofer: “On the one hand we want politicians without extra income, on the other hand they must have professional experience.” One thing is certain: “There is a lot of room for new things. Also on the left, as Wlazny (Beer Party) shows.”

An older study by Christoph Haselmayer (IFDD) confirms these findings. More than 40 percent would have chosen a movement without active politicians. Thomas Hofer: “The waiting room is quite full.”
