Salaries are rising – our politicians are now getting paid more

Date:

The increase in inflation is also reflected in politicians’ salaries: they will receive 5.3 percent more money in the coming year. Unless the National Council decides otherwise, the increase will take effect on 1 January 2023. The starting point of the “benefit pyramid” is the income of the members of the National Council. Next year you will receive 9873 euros gross per month – 497 euros more than this year (all values rounded to whole euros, please note).

The Court of Audit published this legal increase on Thursday in the Official Gazette of the “Wiener Zeitung”. Based on the salaries of the members of the National Council, the salaries of the other politicians are also calculated in the system established after several remuneration scandals in 1997 – but with a certain limitation: for the year 2021, a zero wage round was established for federal politicians decided up to club president level but also for ombudsman and RH President – for these positions a different starting value for the salary increase applies – namely 9536 euros.

Highest salary increase for Federal President Van der Bellen
At the top is Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen, who receives 280 percent of the starting amount and thus 26,701 euros (plus 1,344 euros), against Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) with 23,840 euros monthly remuneration (plus 1,200 euros) and Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler (Greens ): 20,979 (plus 1,056 euros). The provincial governors receive a maximum of 19,745 euros (plus 994 euros), with the salary limitation law for state politicians only indicating upper limits that may also be undershot.

Ministers will receive 19,072 euros next year (plus 960 euros). The club representatives of the five parliamentary parties are entitled to 16,211 euros (plus 816 euros), President of the National Council Wolfgang Sobotka (ÖVP) gets 20,026 (plus 1,009 euros). In addition to the governor, the income pyramid also regulates the upper limits for a number of other state politicians, including the state councilors (EUR 17,771), the presidents of the state parliament (EUR 14,809) and the members of the state parliament (EUR 7,898). The mandates of the Federal Council receive exactly half less than their colleagues in the National Council: 4936 euros.

No room for salary increases
President of the Audit Chamber Margit Kraker has no leeway in determining salary increases. They result from a statutory adjustment factor. This corresponds either to the inflation in the period from July last year to June of the current year or to the ASVG pension increase for the following year. The lower value is used. For 2023 that was an inflation rate of 5.3 percent (corresponding to a correction factor of 1.053), the ASVG value was 5.8 percent.
