Minister in “Club 3” – Asylum: Karner relies on dialogue rather than a crackdown

Date:

The Minister of the Interior does not want access rights against the federal states if asylum seekers are looking for accommodation. However, its primary goal is to reduce migration. He threatens to veto the possible accession of Bulgaria and Romania.

EU interior ministers will vote next week on the admission of Bulgaria, Croatia and Romania to the Schengen area. The EU Commission and the European Parliament have already given the green light, but Austria threatens to veto the accession of Bulgaria and Romania due to the sharp increase in the number of refugees. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner repeated this threat in the Club 3 Talk of “Krone”, “Kurier” and “profil”. “Although Austria is completely landlocked and surrounded by safe third countries, we have apprehended 100,000 people at the border this year. Of these, 75,000 were registered for the first time in Austria.”

The veto club is not just a threat so that something happens here. “It is the job of the interior minister to deal with things.” Europe needs to think about what the basic idea of the Geneva Refugee Convention is. “Namely to help those people who need our help. So that the right of asylum is there for those who need it and not use it to control economic migration via the other side. I think this is completely the wrong way. We must separate that clearly. Legal migration and the fight against illegal migration,” said the Minister of the Interior.

In the dispute between the federal and state governments over the reception of asylum seekers, the Interior Minister wants to appeal to “dialogue instead of the right to intervene”. However, his primary goal is “less illegal migration, so less new construction”.

“In the polls, this has so far mainly helped the Party for Freedom. It was. Sebastian Kurz spoke about closing the Balkan route and played the migration issue very big. Meanwhile, the losers go to the PVV,” says Karner.
