South Korean police have searched President Yoon Suk Yeol’s office. Yoon had already been banned from leaving the country due to the investigation into his brief imposition of martial law.
“The Special Investigation Group raided the presidential office, the National Police, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Department and the National Assembly Security Department,” the department told AFP on Wednesday.
Yoon declared martial law last Tuesday. Shortly afterwards, however, Parliament used its veto power against the measure in a dramatic session, after which the president lifted martial law after a few hours.
The president must resign
Yoon’s drastic actions led to mass protests. On Saturday, a motion to impeach the president failed in the South Korean parliament. On Sunday, the DP announced a new attempt at impeachment proceedings. Yoon’s PPP said on Tuesday it was preparing a “road map to resignation” for the president, under which he could step down in February or March and then hold new elections.
An arrest warrant was issued on Tuesday for Defense Minister Kim Yong Hyun, who was arrested on Sunday and resigned earlier. Kim was charged, among other things, with “exercising sovereign duties during an uprising” and “abuse of office to obstruct the exercise of rights,” according to the responsible court.
Minister wanted to commit suicide
On Wednesday, a senior prison official told a parliamentary hearing that Kim had recently attempted suicide. He is now under protection in a secure cell and is in good health. According to police, the commissioner general of the National Police Agency and the head of the Seoul Metropolitan Police were also arrested early Wednesday morning.
