Last summer the thermometer regularly rose over the 35 -degree and the temperature records were already broken in 2025. Heat waves caused by climate change can be life threatening, Greenpeace now warns the government to act.
“When the asphalt glows and the air is like a wall, the heat and heat become dangerous from the summer,” says Jasmin Duregger, climate and energy expert at Greenpeace.
Children and the elderly mainly run the risk
In Europe, the temperatures are already climbing to 40 degrees in the summer, which can damage and even life -threatening, warns Greenpeace. Children, the elderly and people who work outside, mainly run the risk. “The body has limits – and we tear them off,” says the Organization for Environmental Protection on the occasion of the Earth Day on April 22.
Weakest suffering the most
“The climate crisis is not a future scenario. It drives our earth as a fever to the load limit,” says Duregger. The weakest suffering from the heat the most, the expert criticizes. “Although politics is hesitant, people without a shadow suffer from the heated living rooms, hidden nursing homes or cities.”
The government should act
Greenpeace therefore calls on the government to take measures to make the heat more bearable. There should be financing for renovations and better insulation in buildings, because isolated houses keep the heat better, the organization says.
Especially in the cities, Greenpeace also requires more greening, shade rooms and cold air bars, over which cooler air can flow into the city.
