Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) has been in office for exactly one year. Reason enough for the Minister of the Interior to take stock. “A lot has been implemented,” Karner praised at a press conference on Monday. He mentioned successes in the fight against human trafficking. “640 smugglers were arrested this year,” Karner revealed. Between January and the end of October, there were 92,000 asylum applications in Austria. At the moment, however, not a single refugee is in a tent, Karner emphasises.
The Causa tents have caused quite a stir in recent weeks and months. In mid-October, Karner described the setting up of tents – in the absence of permanent housing – as a measure against “loitering refugees”.
Then a dispute raged with the federal states. By now, however, there seems to be enough accommodation again, so the storm should have subsided.
Work permits for asylum seekers: Karner rejects Ludwig’s advance
Karner also clearly rejected Vienna’s mayor Michael Ludwig’s proposal to allow asylum seekers access to the labor market. “We need the fight against asylum abuse and should not create additional incentives. Our system is under load,” Karner justified himself.
Cooperation with the Greens “reasonable”
Karner described cooperation with the coalition partner at the federal level, the Greens, as “fair”. It was incredibly successful. Karner mentioned the anti-inflation packages and full gas storage facilities. The riots that threatened to break out in the street in advance did not take place because timely measures were taken.
