The smoking ban is being extended even further in Austria: Health Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens) plans to ban smoking in places such as children’s playgrounds or recreational areas for young people in the future. In addition, the smoking ban in cars with traveling children will be extended.
According to the Ministry of Health’s “Standard,” an amendment to the Tobacco and Non-Smoker Protection Act is currently “in the final vote.” An extension of the smoking ban to “additional outdoor public places” is therefore planned. This includes, for example, “children’s playgrounds and recreation areas for children and young people”.
The change will be reviewed in early 2023
Currently, there is already a smoking ban in the car if there are children in the car. In the future, the driver will have to “check” the ban. The amendment to the law must be examined as early as early 2023.
There are also restrictions on nicotine pouches – small packets that are pushed under the upper lip and release the addictive substance there. Unlike banned snus, the pouches contain no tobacco and are popular with young people.
New Zealand much stricter
New Zealand is currently implementing even stricter measures against tobacco smoking. From next year, tobacco may no longer be sold to people born on or after January 1, 2009. Violations can lead to terrible penalties. According to Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, the Pacific state must be “smoke-free” by 2025.
