Far-right Romanian presidential candidate Calin Georgescu wants to stop supporting Ukraine if he wins the elections. He also holds out the prospect of an end to Ukrainian grain exports currently passing through his country.
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Romania has exported millions of tons of Ukrainian grain through the Black Sea port of Constanta, trained the neighboring country’s fighter pilots and provided the government in Kiev with a Patriot air defense battery. All this will stop if he wins, Georgescu-Roegen said in an interview with Reuters news agency.
NATO spending target “doesn’t interest me”
“It is unthinkable that there is a war going on in the middle of Europe right next to us, so a priority will certainly be to stop this war in Ukraine immediately,” said the surprise winner of the first round of the presidential elections. When asked about meeting NATO’s spending target, he said: “That’s completely irrelevant, I’m not even interested in that.”
Georgescu-Roegen is considered an admirer of old and new US President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly emphasized that Europeans must pay for their own security and that he is acting according to the “America first” principle.
