‘The commitment to the victims is clear’

Strasbourg condemned Spain for depriving the prisoner of San Sebastian a lawyer, thereby violating his right to a fair trial. The prosecutor is appealing the sentence.

Spain’s Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska defended on Monday that “the Spanish government’s commitment to the victims of terrorism and in the fight against terrorism is clear and obvious”, all after the announcement of resource of the State Attorney for the Conviction of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) condemning Spain for violating the right to a fair trial of the prisoner of the defunct ETA, Xavier Atristain

Speaking to journalists in Puente Genil (Córdoba), the minister stated “with regard to ETA terrorism” that the Spanish government “continues to fight and investigate the attacks that have unfortunately not been solved to date”, while “continuing to work with specialized units”.

In this way, Grande-Marlaska underlines the “commitment to the victims in creating a memory, that is, the memory of the victims, with truth, justice and dignity”. “They are really our benchmark,” he emphasized.

The deadline for lodging an appeal with the Strasbourg Court this mondayand government sources have confirmed that they will present the letter today.
