Election campaign started – ÖVP swears by the fateful elections in Lower Austria

Date:

Thunderous applause, big productions and clear announcements: the ÖVP election campaign machine is freshly oiled – and wants to get started in Lower Austria! The official election campaign started on Monday evening in the capital of the state of Lower Austria. The “Krone” was there for you.

On Monday evening it took exactly twenty days for the mother of all election battles to be fought in the black heart. At the start of the election campaign in the VAZ in St. Pöltner, Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner left no doubt about the enormous importance of the state elections. “We only have 20 days left. What applies then will be valid for five years and can only be changed again from 2028,” Mikl-Leinter said in front of the approximately 3,200 attendees.

Buntes trio?
Like the previous speaker, party manager and campaign strategist Bernhard Ebner, she alluded to a theoretically possible three-party coalition along the ÖVP, which has so far ruled with an absolute majority. According to studies, the SPÖ, FPÖ and NEOS could theoretically form a majority in the state parliament without the ÖVP – thus also causing a change of power in the executive floor of the manor. Mikl-Leitner will remain chairman of the board until January 29. After that, Franz Schnabl (SPÖ) and or FPÖ leader Udo Landbauer could contest this.

However, it is doubtful that a red-blue pact is automatically probable just because it could be mathematically possible. Both top candidates have so far at least not publicly ruled out a coalition. At the start of their election campaign, Landbauer and Schnabl almost unanimously declared “change” as the primary election goal.

“Schnabl and Boeren against Mikl-Leitner”
For the ÖVP, the matter is clear: according to Ebner, the duel in the final is for Lower Austria: “All against us, all against Johanna Mikl-Leitner or, in other words, Schnabl-Landbauer or Mikl-Leitner!” dramatic words from Ebner, so that the applause of the black fellow activists roared on the spot. Among them were numerous representatives of the federal party – especially Chancellor Karl Nehammer, who was born in Vienna but calls Lower Austria his political home. He also secured the governor’s full support.

Claim to absolute majority officially buried
With six sub-organisations, 20 district offices, 63 mandataries, 335 candidates, 452 mayors, 573 municipal party chairmen, more than 7,000 municipal councillors, 20,000 civil servants and 220,000 members, the state party is by far the largest party organization in Austria. Despite the concentrated political professionalism and the large number of men, the ÖVP Lower Austria is also clear: the times of absolute majorities are over. All over Europe – even in the wide country.
