In the series of “ZiB 2” interviews with the party leaders at the turn of the year, it was Chancellor Karl Nehammer’s turn on Wednesday evening. The ÖVP boss defended the results of the two-day government meeting and engaged in some verbal battles with “ZiB 2” moderator Martin Thür over legislative decisions or corruption investigations. Nehammer became emotional when he remembered the terrorist attack in Vienna in November 2020, which took place during his time as interior minister. “Those were my worst moments in my time as a politician.”
According to Nehammer, the domestic policy of the federal government this year is about “further developing freedom in Austria”. For example, an agreement has been reached with the coalition partner on a reform of the environmental impact assessment (EIA). This should speed up the approval process. In addition, there should be further simplifications in the field of renewable energy.
‘Legislative period will last until 2024’
Nehammer contradicted Thür, according to which the big chunks, such as a reform of the anti-corruption criminal law, had long been awaiting a legislative decision. “1066 laws have been passed, three planned laws not yet, but the legislature will last until 2024,” said Nehammer.
