With a true coup, parliament resumed work in the building on the Ring on Thursday. Numerous guests of honor were also invited to an event in the historic meeting room. This also applies to ex-vice chancellor and ex-FPÖ leader Heinz-Christian Strache.
Strache took a seat next to former Vice-Chancellor Hubert Gorbach. A row ahead, former chancellors Franz Vranitzky (SPÖ) and Wolfgang Bowl (ÖVP) and former chancellors Brigitte Bierlein listened to the speeches.
Kickl was absent due to illness
Strache’s successor as FPÖ boss, Herbert Kickl, died of illness on Thursday. He had to cancel a scheduled “ZiB 2” interview on Monday.
Beautiful boardroom
The historic meeting room presented itself beautifully on Thursday as usual. The musical accompaniment came from the Wiener Philharmoniker and the Boys’ Choir, which performed works by Georg Friedrich Händel, Antonin Dvorak and Johann Strauss Sohn, among others.
In addition to the members of both chambers and the EU parliament, numerous guests from foreign parliaments, such as the former president of the German Bundestag Wolfgang Schäuble (CDU), who also gave a speech, were able to listen. Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen also honored Parliament, as did the federal government.
