In the case of Aragonès, according to the Generalitat, it is confirmed that in any case the infection of his mobile occurred in messages received in January 2020 during the negotiations to invest Sánchez.

The President of the Generalitat, Pere Aragoneswarned that the government’s political relationship with the Spanish government remains “affected” by the alleged espionage “Normal political relations cannot be restored,” he said.

This was confirmed by the Catalan president during a press conference in the Palau de la Generalitat, after leading an extraordinary meeting of the government to coordinate a response to the case of political espionage against 63 pro-independence leaders, victims of the Pegasus cyber-espionage systemaccording to information from The New Yorker with data obtained by The Citizen Lab.

The Vice President of the Generalitat also referred to it, Jordi Puignerowho claimed that Spain is no longer a full democracy, in his words, and that it is on its way to becoming a democracy that does not meet European minimum standards: “This is why this government has pledged that it will not normalize relations right away repressive state

‘Normal political relations cannot be restored’

Aragonès has asked the government to launch an internal investigation with independent oversight “as soon as possible” to clarify the responsibilities of this alleged espionage and has confirmed that until this happens, political relations with the government will be affected in cases such as the dialogue and the bilateral commission.

“It is clear that this case of espionage and the way the state government is handling it could have important political consequences immediately,” and he has demanded transparency from the government as he assures that this case has changed trust with the Sánchez executive.

The Catalan President has assured that, after transcending this alleged espionage, “trust is minimal” and has insisted that it is up to the government to assume the necessary responsibilities to restore it.

two tries

As the Catalan president has explained, the attempts to infect his personal phone in his particular case have happened twice: just after the Supreme Court ruling of 14 October 2019 about the independence process, but also during the first days of January 2020as talks and negotiations took place for the inauguration of Pedro Sánchez as Prime Minister.

Sources from the Generalitat have explained that the messages Aragonès received were alleged breaking news media reports, which were in fact false; when the user entered the news link, the Pegasus system was able to enter that mobile terminal without Aragonès being aware of it.

In the case of Aragonès, according to the Generalitat, it is confirmed that this infection has occurred in any case in the case of the messages received in January 2020 during the negotiations to invest Sánchez, which was finally authorized by ERC, a party whose Aragonès chief coordinator.

But Aragonès has gone further, suggesting that he cannot currently “guarantee one hundred percent” that his communications are “protected” today when asked.
