Thanks to inflation – strong plus in party financing

Date:

The high inflation is also causing a sharp increase in party financing. The Chancellery does not yet provide concrete figures, but according to calculations based on preliminary data, party financing will increase from 31.8 to about 34.5 million euros. Including parliamentary clubs and academies, approximately $71.3 million in federal funding will flow to the parties this year.

Since 2019, party financing has been adjusted annually for inflation. For 2023 this means an increase from about 2.7 to 34.5 million euros. According to the parliamentary management, club financing in parliament, which is linked to the development of civil servant salaries, will increase by 1.4 million euros to 26.3 million euros. On the other hand, the funding for party academies (10.5 million euros), which has not been increased since 2014 and has now lost more than a fifth of its value, remains frozen.

Because the funds are divided among the parties according to their relative strength in the last elections to the National Council, the ÖVP receives the most from the funding pot (24.2 million euros). It was followed by the SPÖ with €15.6 million, ahead of the FPÖ with €12.4 million. The Greens are entitled to 11.2 million euros for the party, club and academy and the NEOS to 7.8 million euros.

In addition, the parties receive at least double the subsidy at national level. Here, however, the upcoming state elections are likely to cause shifts between the parties.
