In total, 23 major municipalities in the Spanish state will change the number of councilors in their town halls in the May municipal elections, due to the population changes they have experienced since the 2019 elections, including the 4 that Burlada wins and Barañáin loses (Navarra).
Based on the official data of the last census published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), which corresponds to 2022, and the electoral law, which determines the number of mayors according to population scale, there are 21 municipalities with more than 20,000 inhabitants which increase their number of councillors, and 2 which decrease them.
One of two cities to see their municipal corporation reduced in elections on May 28 is Baranainas it has dropped below 20,000 inhabitants, which means we go from 21 to 17 councillors, thus losing four.
Likewise, there are fourteen towns that have populations over 20,000 at the last census, meaning there are still 4 councilors (going from 17 to 21). It’s the case of mocked.
