Long session – National Council: ten referenda to start with

Date:

In a prominent place, right at the start of the session, the National Council discussed ten referenda on Wednesday. About 70 speakers lined up to address citizens’ concerns – from anti-corruption to housing.

Four referenda were partially finalized – including the highly successful “Stop Lebendtier-Transportqual” initiative of the Lower Austrian provincial councilor Gottfried Waldhäusl (FPÖ) and the anti-corruption initiative, which was closely followed by the media. Six others, including the cash initiative, which was also very successful, received a ‘first reading’ before being dealt with in detail in committee.

Legislative decisions are then pending in the second half of the meeting, including the implementation of the EU directive on the protection of whistleblowers or the increase of the maintenance bonus.

The first regular plenary session after returning to the main building ended on Tuesday evening after more than eleven hours of debate.
