Nobody wants to work with Herbert Kickl (FPÖ) – but at the request of Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen, talks will start on Tuesday about possible cooperation with the FPÖ, which has the highest number of votes. It starts with the incumbent Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP).
Only on Monday did the ÖVP repeat its clear no to a coalition with the election winner. Two and a half weeks after the vote, mandated talks between the party leaders of the FPÖ, ÖVP and SPÖ are now starting.
In the afternoon Nehammer will explore the possibilities for collaboration with Kickl, further discussions will follow on Wednesday and Thursday. Kickl claims the chancellorship, but is currently alone in the field because no party has shown itself willing to grant his wish.
The party leaders kept to themselves where they would meet. The conversation between Nehammer and SPÖ leader Andreas Babler will take place on Wednesday, and on Thursday between Kickl and Babler.
President spoke of ‘classic stalemate’
Van der Bellen has not yet given any party a mandate to form a government. The Federal President explained that he was not allowing the FPÖ to have a say for the time being because there was a ‘classic deadlock’, as it was an election winner with whom none of the other parties apparently wanted to govern.
The three party leaders must now “reliably make it clear what cooperation is conceivable” by the end of the week.
