Report U-Committee – Greens: “Protocol of a great deception”

Date:

The Greens were the first of the parliamentary groups in the ÖVP’s corruption investigation committee to present their report on Thursday. According to group leader Nina Tomaselli, it contains the “accurate account of a great deception”, as the title of the report reads. It was “exactly shown how a small Turkish circle of power around ex-chancellor Sebastian Kurz deceived the whole country,” Tomaselli emphasized when presenting to journalists.

“They manipulated, with manipulated surveys and advertisements financed with taxpayers’ money,” said the leader of the Greens. The so-called “bone scraper tool” has gained fame almost throughout Europe. But the Vorarlberg “Wirtschaftsbund-Tool” and the “Advertising golden donkey of the farm newspaper” were also examined in detail. This circle of power around Kurz operated “postenschacher” and abused the republic as a “self-service shop”. Instead of the competent, according to Tomaselli, those “who are verifiable” were selected for various positions in the administration.

‘Feel-good program for super rich friends’
They provided “super rich friends through special treatment”. For example, entrepreneur Siegfried Wolf was allowed a “large tax break” after he intervened with the Ministry of Finance. The Ministry of Finance also took care of real estate investor René Benko. “While ordinary people pay taxes, the Treasury Department has been running a fiscal comfort program for the super rich,” said Tomaselli.

Another topic was the “Russian Cuddle Course”. Kurz and his circle of power have maneuvered Austria into a dangerous situation. According to the MEP, people now feel the effects of energy policy on a daily basis. This topic would also lend itself to a new subcommittee. In this regard, they have already felt for the other factions. Only the NEOS have given signals of approval. But that’s not enough, Tomaselli admitted. A quarter of the MPs are needed for a University committee on minority rights.

Greens want “continuous work”
Now it is a matter of regaining lost confidence in politics. The subcommittee has done a lot for this and was able to have a “very good effect” during its term, Tomaselli referred to numerous resignations, for example of Kurz or the ex-VP ministers Gernot Blümel or Elisabeth Köstinger. In addition, former justice minister Wolfgang Brandstetter (ÖVP) resigned as constitutional judge, senior prosecutor Johann Fuchs lost technical supervision of the WKStA and the powerful chief of the judiciary, Christian Pilnacek, was suspended. “It’s all good news,” said Tomaselli. In addition, there were “many positive decisions” from a legal point of view, such as “transparent party treasury” or a strict anti-corruption law. And they will “continue to work persistently” on a modern freedom of information law.

The report is titled “Protocol of a Great Deception” and presents the findings of the U Committee and the views of the Green Group over 91 pages. Six chapters are devoted to the core areas and are entitled “A toolbox for Trixer – The Advertisement business”, “Assignments for friendly companies”, “Special treatment for the super rich”, “Job exchange” and “Cuddle course with Putin”.

26.5 million pages of files
Similar to the final green report on the Ibiza U committee, a chapter recapitulates the statistics. For example, one learns that a total of 85 surveys were conducted in 42 survey days. The duration of the study was 218 hours and 48 minutes. A total of 26.5 million pages of files and documents were delivered. Of these, 19,773 files were electronic, the rest came in 2,160 paper folders.
