The border towns of Schattendorf and St. Margarethen suffer from heavy commuting to and from Hungary. Structural measures and driving bans are aimed at relieving the burden on municipal roads that are not actually designed for this and the residents. But that causes a fight with Hungary. Burgenland Governor Hans Peter Doskozil and Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó discussed the matter on Monday.
In an interview with Szijjártó, Doskozil explained the reasons for the measures, according to his office. For Burgenland, it is essential that questions about cross-border traffic always take into account the infrastructural conditions and the quality of life of the local population.
It was agreed to continue the dialogue at expert level. Szijjártó also explained afterwards that it must be worked out how targeted traffic controls can ensure fast border crossings while preserving the quality of life in the cities and villages.
Praise for Doskozil from Budapest
Szijjártó said on his Facebook page: “I have always found Governor Doskozil constructive and correct. I was not disappointed this time either.”
