He acknowledged the progress made in recent years but insisted that, fearing the political change that may come, the steps to be taken are even more urgent, “to allow for the consolidation of a situation which makes it difficult to to roll it back.”

The Social Forum has the progress in prison policy of recent years, and has revealed some challenges for the foreseeable future that put an end to the “exceptional prison policy” still in effect. Among the elements to be changed are the accumulation of sentences handed down in other European states and the obstacles placed with great weight by the “lobbies” in the National Court.
In a press conference offered by the spokespersons Nekane Altzelaic Nazario Oleaga Y Agus Hernanthe Social Forum has emphasized that there are political majorities in the Basque Parliament, the Parliament of Navarre and the Congress of Deputies to continue changing prison policies, but they have warned that, given fears that the scenario could change after the elections, the steps to take are”most urgent in the short termto allow the consolidation of a situation that makes it difficult to roll back”.
Among the claims they mentioned the end of the dispersal policy (102 prisoners in Euskal Herria and 65 in nearby prisons), the application of numbers (22 in the third grade and the others in the second), the “humanization” of the penitentiary policy and the transfer of powers to the CAV. The Social Forum underlines that on the way to achieve this, the obstacles arising from the “ongietorris” and the “battle of the story” have been overcome.
The Forum regretted that the sentences already handed down in other European states continue to pile up and that there are “lobbies” with great influence over some Supreme Court judges, who “have created new problems that were not two years ago”.
“We are mainly talking about the obstacles that the National Supreme Court is putting up in the reintegration processes of prisoners convicted of politically motivated crimes and, in particular, second-degree licenses and evolution to third-degree,” they explain. .
In addition to changing the “obstructive position” of some judges and the accumulation of sentences, the Social Forum believes that prisoners still outside Euskal Herria should be transferred to prisons in the CAV or Navarra.
“The Permanent Social Forum will continue to contribute in discrete and public forums so that, sooner rather than later, a definitive solution is given to the issue of prisoners, based on three principles: consensus, respect for victims and application of a prison policy simply; and one goal: to contribute to democratic coexistence,” she added.
