The Council of Ministers has approved the design of the future Parity Representation Act, known as the parity law, on the eve of International Women’s Day. In the press conference that followed, Spanish government spokesman Isabel Rodríguez stressed that it is a groundbreaking law that once again puts Spain at the forefront of feminist policy in the world.
The parity law states a quotas of women in government bodies such as the Council of Ministers and in the management of large companieswhich must guarantee that 40% of the components are female.
In concrete terms, all listed companies or public interest organizations with more than 250 employees and 50 million annual turnover will have to meet this percentage, as well as the boards of professional associations and juries that award publicly funded prizes.
Listed companies have until July 1, 2024, while companies with more than 250 employees and an annual turnover of more than 50 million euros are counted until July 2026.
The standard will maintain the mandatory nature of the pick lists zipperthat is to say, they integrate men and women in total rotation and stipulates that the government of Spain must also be guided by the principle of a balanced presence of women and men.
