Kunasek and Drexler – leave! Blue and black negotiate at the airport

Date:

At Graz airport, Mario Kunasek begins government negotiations with Christopher Drexler, who has brought the election winner on board as a possible coalition partner. There will be a cash collapse on today’s first day, and the government will remain in office until the new state parliament convenes on December 18.

The FPÖ and ÖVP did not, as usual, choose the terrain of the country – the media center in the Graz Hofgasse, the castle or the manor – to appear before the public as their new ‘fiances’: no, the location of the first joint press conference was Graz Airport, apparently as a symbol of departure. The leaders of the two parties now want to quickly negotiate a coalition agreement.

Kunasek: “Don’t waste time”
“There are many substantive overlaps with the People’s Party. We assume that it will soon be possible to form a stable, viable state government,” said election winner Mario Kunasek. There is no time to lose; a cash register collapse must happen immediately. This “budget presentation” forms the basis for further discussions.

“In the exploratory talks there was a very constructive basis for discussions with Mario Kunasek and the FPÖ,” emphasized then-Governor Christopher Drexler. He would like to see ‘good results in the negotiations’, although there is no guarantee of this yet, ‘but at least we are starting very motivated’. The topic of work and the economy is on the agenda on Wednesday: “Styria as a business location is being tested,” said the ÖVP boss.

“I wouldn’t assume so”
Will Kunasek and Drexler get along? In any case, neither shows anything to the contrary. Last week, print media in Styria reported that the FPÖ leader would bring the ÖVP into the state government alone without Drexler. “I never told the governor that and I wouldn’t presume I would. This is fake news, it is a newspaper duck,” Kunasek said.

Negotiation teams are ready
The two parties’ negotiating teams each consist of three people: in the case of the FPÖ, in addition to Kunasek, state party secretary Stefan Hermann and club director Michael Klug. In addition to Drexler, the ÖVP also includes the two former state councilors Werner Amon and Barbara Eibinger-Miedl. For certain fields, the three-person teams can be reinforced with a fourth person, Drexler explains. For the ÖVP, for example, these will be the other two state councilors Karlheinz Kornhäusl and Simone Schmiedtbauer.
