At the state meeting – Gebi Mair wants to become head of the Tyrolean Greens

Date:

The Tyrolean Greens, recently hit by the crisis, will hold a groundbreaking state meeting in Telfs next Saturday. The criticized club president Gebi Mair is going all out and is running for the post of state spokesman, in all probability the only one. Mair wants to give members a “brutal analysis” and a “clear statement” about his “personal future and that of the Greens”.

In an interview with the APA, the green frontman would not say where his personal pain threshold or percentage point for the election as state spokesman for the neo-opposition party lies. But he “of course” defined one for himself, says Mair.

Mair probably the only candidate
The application deadline for candidacies passed last weekend. That Mair is actually the only candidate is considered very likely, but is not yet one hundred percent certain. Because there is a green special feature, namely that an applicant can theoretically also register his or her candidacy at the state assembly.

There would be speculation and rumors within the party that National Council member Barbara Nessler could announce a candidacy at the last minute. Neßler herself said she “does not want to comment publicly on the election of the state spokesman at this time.” “Even though it is currently common practice among other parties to communicate internal affairs publicly, I remain committed to the principle of communicating such matters internally,” explained the 32-year-old MP and spokeswoman for tourism, who is said to have a very good reputation . within the party.

Mair will attend the hearing and give a speech
If Mair enters the ring alone, his future status and probably his personal political future will depend mainly on whether the number of cuts is limited and whether he can unite a significant percentage majority. And also how many members come to the meeting. “100 to 150” are expected, the state party said.

Mair admitted that some catching up was needed, including in terms of structure. For example, it has not yet been possible to set up strong structures in all districts. There is also a need to catch up in winning new and young people “for the existing group”. In any case, “opening up and broadening” is necessary, also in terms of networking with NGOs and citizens’ initiatives.

The Greens in Tyrol are rumbling
After the state elections last fall with Mair as the top candidate, the Greens ended up on the opposition bench after almost ten years in government. In the elections they lost 1.5 percentage points (result: 9.2 percent) and had to accept the loss of a mandate. Since then at the latest there has been a lot of rumbling, sometimes in public. Mair has recently faced public opposition within the party at the district level. He was accused of lack of leadership skills, communication and transparency.

Innsbruck is even more upside down. Mayor Georg Willi has been hit politically there, most recently being targeted for a special contract made known by the city’s ex-head of human resources. Last November, three Green councilors caused a bang, left the parliamentary party and founded their own club.
