Following the draft law for the partial legalization of cannabis in Germany, the Austrian police are planning more checks at the border with the neighboring country. Cross-border trade, but also crazy drivers, is to be expected.
“Therefore, more criminal police measures and traffic controls are being carried out in the border area,” the Interior Ministry said on Thursday.

Drug trafficking is an area of activity of organized crime, which the police consistently combat. Smoking weed must be legal in Germany by the turn of the year at the latest and the corresponding bill was launched on Wednesday by the traffic light coalition in Berlin. German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) spoke of a “turn in drug policy” and was convinced that this would curb the black market, fight drug-related crime and improve health protection.

The plans include removing cannabis from the banned substances list in the Narcotics Act. Possession of 25 grams should be allowed for adults over 18 years old. A maximum of three cannabis plants may be grown privately. In special associations, so-called cannabis clubs, members should be able to grow plants together and give the drug to each other.
