Pedro SanchezPresident of the Government of Spain, has assured that: accountability with “transparency, accountability and compliance with the law” in case of political espionagereferring to the National Intelligence Center (CNI) “internal audit” process.
During the monitoring session in Congress, the ERC spokesperson said Gabriel Rufianhas asked Sánchez whether his Executive intends to investigate the case of espionage against Catalan and Basque pro-independence activists, journalists, lawyers and politicians.
According to Sánchez, the government of Spain has “expressed its will to clarify the facts”, as well as its “determination through dialogue and to overcome the political crisis in Catalonia”. “I would like to ask him to rebuild that confidence,” he asked Rufián.
For the pro-independence leader, there is no doubt that the Spanish state “has been spying, spying and will spy illegally”, as the positions of the Interior Ministry of the PSOE and PP governments have acknowledged. “The question is, did you order it this time,” he said. In Rufián’s words, espionage is “terribly serious” if it was ordered by the Executive and “even more terrible” if it was not ordered, “because it means you haven’t cleaned your sewers” and then, “the sewers are filling with rats and the rats are eating everything”.
Sánchez has stressed that all actions of the CNI have been carried out “in accordance with the law”.
