The state capital of Vorarlberg is the first municipality in Austria to support the demands of the climate protection group Last Generation. The co-founder is convinced that she will not be the last.
It was a historic moment: at the city council meeting on Tuesday, the state capital of Vorarlberg decided to support the demands of the last-generation climate protection group. Bregenz is the first municipality in Austria to support the not entirely undisputed action group. The members are known for their sometimes radical actions, such as spraying paint on artwork.
Letter to the Chancellor
In a letter to the federal government – signed by Mayor Michael Ritsch (SPÖ) and Deputy Mayor Sandra Schoch (Greens) – the city specifically calls for the speed limit on highways to be reduced to 100 km/h, no new oil and gas drilling be allowed and the recommendations of the Austrian Climate Council.
Ritsch does not want this measure to be seen as a political tactical maneuver: “I am making such a decision from the deepest conviction that effective measures against the climate crisis are urgently needed.”
hope for more communities
For the co-founder of the last generation, Martha Krumpeck, this step broke the ice: ‘Other churches will follow,’ she is convinced. Her hope: to be able to build up so much pressure “that the Chancellor can no longer avoid protective measures”.
