In 2018, an energy efficiency directive was adopted in the EU – under the Austrian presidency and to be implemented by 2020. A remedy for climate change. Austria is now facing fines worth millions for not implementing the directive.
This is evident from a letter from the Constitutional Service of the Federal Chancellery to the Climate Ministry of Leonore Gewessler (Greens). The first EU sanctions are imminent in two weeks.
Unlike the government’s climate policy, the four-page newspaper owned by the “Krone” lacks nothing in clarity. There is not even a concrete timetable for implementation.
Time is short for a two-thirds majority
Gewessler’s office is aware of the problem. From the start there was pressure to introduce the Energy Efficiency Act quickly. “The first draft was sent to the ÖVP in January 2021.” This was followed by 12 modified versions. The bill went to parliament in February 2023. Negotiations with the opposition are underway. You need a two-thirds majority. If you want to avoid the first sanctions, you need to hurry.
