mobile phones from Pedro SanchezPresident of the Government of Spain, and of Margaret OaksMinister of Defence, are also infected by the Pegasus spy systemas announced by the Minister of the Presidency, relations with the courts and democratic memory, Felix Bolanosand they disclosed it to the National High Court, where they sent two technical reports from the National Cryptologic Center.
The executive has explained that the president’s cell phone was infected in May 2021twice, and that the minister has invaded in June of the same year. As certified by the government, there has been no infringement on subsequent dates.
These breaches of the devices of members of the Executive are “contradictory and reliable facts, not assumptions”. As Boñalos explained, the executive is moving forward with an investigation that “will reach all members of the government” to determine who has been spied on.
“These are proven and extremely serious facts confirming that there have been break-ins in areas outside the state institutions and outside the law,” he added. The minister added that they are illegal and “external” interventions He later clarified that “external” means “that is foreign to government agencies and that has no judicial authorization”.
The government does not know what information it has obtained
The minister explained that “there is evidence that the Pegasus software” has been used illegally in at least 20 countries and that among the victims of these interventions are governments, civil society personalities from different fields, informers, people of different natures”.
“We want the justice system to investigate to get to the whole truth and that’s why we’ve made available all the information we have,” he explained, stressing: “In a full democracy like ours, they are only empowered to intervene of official bodies and always with judicial authorization”.
“The Spanish government is acting with all available capacities to clarify these facts, to protect the security of communications and also to guarantee people’s fundamental right to privacy. That has been the government’s unequivocal commitment since the first information was received in that an alleged use of Pegasus was reported outside of legal control. That has been the commitment and this will be the standard the government will apply to the letter,” said Bolaños.
In this way, the Minister has indicated that the Board has already implemented and will continue to implement.”measures to strengthen security protocols in communications from all official bodies which it will make available not only to central government, but also to regional governments, regional parliaments, local institutions and, in general, to the other institutions”.
“Once we had the information, once we knew the facts that we just explained in this press conference, we brought them to justice so that the investigation can begin without further delay and with all dexterity.”
Finally, Bolaños clarified that the government knows the “magnitude” of the data extracted from the terminals of the president and the secretary of defense, but not “what data it was”. According to government sources quoted by Cadena SER, the mobile phone of Sánchez was downloaded 2.6 GB in the first intervention and 130 MB in the second. In Robles it was 9MB.
