The minister has not alluded to statements by the Lehendakari in which Urkullu has indicated that “a gesture of restorative justice is still pending” on the part of the state.
“I am proud to be here also representing the legitimate government that was attacked,” he said. Felix Bolanos, Minister of the Presidency, Relations with Parliament and Democratic Memory in Gernika. “The coup plotters against the legitimate government in 1937 indiscriminately bombed the defenseless civilian population of Gernika, just as they bombed Durango, Eibar, Otxandio and places in Euskadi and the rest of Spain,” the minister recalled.
Bolaños attended the commemorative events for the 86th anniversary of the bombing of Gernika this Wednesday, the first time a minister of the Spanish government has attended these events.
After the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, announced on Tuesday that Gernika will be declared a “place of remembrance” for the “horror” of the fascist bombings that his city endured in 1937, during the civil war, Bolaños explained in statements to the media that the executive has decided that the first place of this type according to the law of democratic memory is the city of Biscay.
However, the minister has not hinted at it statements of the Lehendakari in which Urkullu has indicated that, 86 years after the bombing, “a gesture of restorative justice is still pending” by the state.
For his part, the mayor of Gernika, Jose Maria Gorrono, has asked the Spanish government to recognize “Franco’s responsibility” in relation to the bombing. Gorroño staged these demonstrations during the tribute paid to George Steer by the City Council.
