Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) will travel to Rome on Tuesday for talks with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The bilateral exchange will focus, among other things, on the themes of asylum and migration, partly in view of the European Council in June, where migration issues are on the agenda.
“Austria and Italy are direct neighbors and close allies in the fight against illegal migration, including at European level. Ahead of the next European Council in June, when migration will be back on the agenda, it is important to agree and align our positions. Because we need strong alliances to make progress at European level. It can no longer be as before,” said Nehammer according to the press release.
“constrict”
“What is special since the last European Council, where we took the first clear steps against illegal migration, is that external border countries such as Italy and inland countries experiencing secondary migration, such as Austria, are now joining forces. We now have to expand that further,” emphasizes Nehammer.
“trustworthy partner”
“Italy has proven to be a reliable partner for returns in the Dublin region, especially in recent years. To successfully prevent illegal migration to Europe, we must use all the means at our disposal. Cooperation with third countries is an important part of the solution to prevent illegal migration – we agree with Italy on that,” the Chancellor concluded.
On April 11, the Italian Council of Ministers decided to declare a state of emergency for the entire national territory for six months. From January 1 to April 11, 31,292 people landed, according to official figures from the General Directorate of Public Security. In the comparison period 2022 there were 7928, in the year before 8505.
