The government will start the announced processing of the pandemic with a social investigation. Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) was absent from the press conference.
Dealing with the corona pandemic costs us half a million euros. That’s how much the government spends on studies and analysis of the three-year crisis. Compared to the Corona costs, that is still a piece of cake. According to its motto “Whatever it costs”, the turquoise-green government has spent huge sums of taxpayers’ money: Corona aid cost 50 billion euros, five billion was spent on laboratory tests alone (without living room tests). No other country has tested as much as Austria.
Become more resilient to future challenges
But that, of course, is not the subject of the work that has now begun. There’s going to be a lot more social science analysis by the Academy of Sciences on issues like scientific skepticism and polarization. Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) initiated the process, but did not attend the opening press conference. Constitutional Minister Karoline Edtstadler (ÖVP) spoke on behalf of the Chancellery, who said that no one can change the past, but that now is the time to draw conclusions, also to make society more resilient to future challenges.
Health Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens) in turn wants to present a new pandemic plan and a new epidemic law. Gerald Loacker of NEOS criticized the fact that the opposition was not involved in this process. FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl called for the government’s resignation as an act of reappraisal.
