A study by the University of Vienna, which aims to investigate the “Effects of Islamic religious education in Austria”, as the title says, has caused quite a stir in the Muslim community. The Muslim Youth (MJÖ) strongly criticizes the “trend structure” and the “stigmatizing performance”. All in all, it is a “racist” study. Education Minister Martin Polaschek (ÖVP) distances himself from the investigation.
The youths involved would report a “sense of discomfort and incomprehension” that only Muslim students should participate in the survey, it said in a statement to the APA. As mentioned, there are also different formulations between knowledge questions about Islam, which are of course intended to clarify the attitude of the students. These should also decide who goes to hell and give an assessment of whether men are weak if they do not use violence. “The sight of disabled people bothers me” is another statement that needs to be evaluated. Another: “When women wear miniskirts or reveal clothes in public, they signal sexual readiness.”
Education minister knows study ‘only from the media’
In addition to the MJÖ, the non-discriminatory education initiative and the organization for civic courage and anti-racism work are also demanding the immediate cessation of studies and a statement from the rector of the University of Vienna. Education Minister Polaschek protested in the sidelines of a press conference on Thursday that he had nothing to do with it: “We did not commission this investigation.” He only knew about the project from the media.
The minister also emphasized that such investigations must indeed be quality assured. Questions must meet ethical standards. According to information from the ministry, individual education departments have been asked whether the research can be carried out. However, some refused. “Personally, I reject this kind of survey,” said the minister. Children must be able to stay in a safe, protected space at school and receive education. “Of course this must be done with the necessary respect and professionalism, with respect for the personal rights of the children.”
By the way, the project manager is Ednan Aslan. He was already responsible for the criticized map of Islam and the controversial kindergarten study.
